History of YARD
The history of YARD goes
back to 1998 when it was the dream of one person, Sebastian Maina Wambugu to help
and work with community teenagers and adults expand their educational, agricultural
and marketing skills for sustainable livelihoods and brighter future.
The dream
that I had remained only a dream until the year 2002, In Kenya’s history, the
year 2002 was an election year, and everyone was gearing up for very competitive
politics and campaigns.
Most of the leaders who vied for various political positions at both local and national level kept on reminding the electorate that the youth were leaders of tomorrow, and most people thought that leadership and leadership positions can only be from a very political edge.

I thought of encouraging
young people and community members of another leadership style –I.e. one of
being the stewards of the people.
You serve the people in many other ways and you become servant leader!, since 2002 YARD has brought forth hundreds and hundreds of community leaders, who work with their own communities on food security projects, simple water harvesting technologies, energy conservation, environmental conservation, encouraging use of locally available resources and making sure that several children attend and are retained in schools.

Am proud to let you know that
since 2002, we have been able to work with more than 20,000 households in
Central province of Kenya.
This has not been easy at all and thanks to our local and international partners who have made tremendous contribution financially, materially, morally and the visits that they occasionally make to YARD.
